Federation calls for radical action on education to boost social mobility and the economy

The Creative Industries Federation warns that the Government’s ambitions for the young people of Britain cannot be achieved without a radical shift in policy on school education and training.

It calls for the Government to drop plans to make 90 per cent of students study the traditional core curriculum called the EBacc.

It further demands a proper audit of the education and training the UK needs for a prosperous future as part of the Government’s new industrial strategy.

A Federation education paper published in October 2016 shows how the current focus on the EBacc - alongside plans for apprenticeships - are limiting the life chances of the next generation and will not achieve the Prime Minister’s ambitions for greater social mobility.

This professional development day is for education/project managers in arts and cultural organisations, music education hubs and others who are interested in developing new ways to engage with music in schools at Key Stage 3.

KS3 music is the highest level at which music education is a statutory entitlement for all young people in UK state schools. However, many music teachers struggle to make the KS3 classroom the dynamic and musical learning environment they wish it to be and arts organisations often report facing significant challenges in engaging with teachers and school music at KS3.

Higher education and the common good

Book launch: Professor Simon Marginson argues that higher education has a key role in rebuilding social solidarity and mobility in fractured societies.

In the last half century higher education has moved from the fringe to the centre of society and accumulated a long list of functions. In the English-speaking world, Europe and much of East Asia more than two thirds of all school students enter tertiary education.

Bulging at the seams, universities are meant to be fountains of new knowledge, engines of prosperity and innovation, drivers of regional growth, skilled migration and global competitiveness, and makers of equality of opportunity.
